Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence

In the film, a former McDonald's restaurant in Herne becomes, alternately documentary and staged, a symbol of the structural transformation of the Ruhr region. At the same time, the history of the store exemplifies the idea of the Americanization of West German post-war society. The film traces the development of the place – the stories of the protagonists are interwoven with overarching themes that continue to strongly shape the region: from the changing concept of work to the future of inner cities to the importance of culture for the region. Thus, private memories and collective memory merge in the film.
